Chapter 2 - Cold Tiles and Warm Tears

Dr. Eleanor Vance adjusted her glasses as she examined Sophie on the examination table at St. Jude’s Children’s Clinic. The room smelled of antiseptic and lavender, soft acoustic music playing from an overhead speaker designed to soothe frightened toddlers. Sophie sat cross-legged, staring at the floor with the guarded stillness of an animal that had learned movement invited danger.
"Mild dehydration, severe caloric deficiency over the last several weeks, and minor bruising along her forearms," Dr. Vance said quietly, stepping toward Daniel outside the curtain partition. Her tone was strictly clinical, but her eyes were tight with indignation. "She is thirty percent below the average weight percentile for a six-year-old girl. Mr. Vance, what happened in that home?"
Daniel lowered his head, pressing the palms of his hands against his temple. "Neglect disguised as discipline," he said through gritted teeth. "Withholding meals when she cried, locking her in the pantry while I was away. I thought she was just naturally petite. I didn't see it. God help me, I didn't see it until today."

Dr. Vance placed a reassuring hand on his arm. "You saw it today. You intervened. That is what matters now. The human body is remarkably resilient, Daniel. The deeper injury will be what lives in her thoughts. When a child learns that home is unsafe, the entire world becomes an ambush."
Daniel returned to Sophie’s side, holding out a small cup of warm chicken broth the nurse had brought. Sophie eyed the steaming liquid suspiciously, her tiny fingers curling into fists. Daniel knelt before her, dipping the plastic spoon into the broth and blowing softly on it. "Take your time, Sophie," he murmured, his voice cracking. "It’s all yours. Nobody is going to take it away." When the first drop touched her tongue, tears welled in her hazel eyes, sliding silently down her pale cheeks.
