Chapter 14 - The Return of Maria

On Thanksgiving morning, a car pulled up to the cabin's driveway. Maria stepped out, holding a large casserole dish wrapped in foil and a bouquet of autumn marigolds.
When Sophie saw her through the window, she dropped her crayons and ran straight out the front door, down the porch steps, and into the arms of the woman who had risked everything to save her. "Maria! Maria, look! I have a dog!"
Maria dropped to her knees in the driveway, embracing Sophie as tears washed over her cheeks. "Look at you, my little angel! Look how tall you are! How bright your face is!"

Daniel walked down the steps and shook Maria’s hand with profound warmth. "Welcome home, Maria. Dinner is waiting."
Inside, the table was piled high with roasted turkey, sweet potatoes, fresh baked rolls, and warm apple pies. For the first time in many years, there was no tension, no cruelty hidden behind porcelain smiles, and no unspoken threats. There was only family—forged not merely by blood, but by courage, redemption, and truth.
