Chapter 8 - Small Miracles at the Kitchen Table

The cabin was warm, smelling of cedarwood and seasoned birch logs crackling in the hearth. In the open-concept kitchen, Daniel spent the mornings learning how to cook meals designed to restore a wounded digestive system. Simple rice porridge, steamed vegetables, and honey-glazed apples became their daily rituals.
Yet the psychological scars remained deep. On the fourth morning, when Daniel accidentally dropped a ceramic coffee mug on the pine floor, the loud shatter sent Sophie scurrying instantly under the heavy dining table, her arms wrapped around her head, trembling violently.
Daniel didn't shout, nor did he rush toward her with panicked urgency. Instead, he sat down calmly on the hardwood floor five feet away from the table, crossing his legs and resting his open hands on his knees.
"It was just a cup, Sophie," he said softly, keeping his breathing slow and rhythmic. "Things break. Accidents happen. Nobody is in trouble. I made a mess, and I am just going to sweep it up."

For twenty minutes, he stayed seated on the floor, singing an old lullaby her grandmother used to hum. Slowly, inch by inch, Sophie crawled out from beneath the shadows of the table. She crept into Daniel’s lap, wrapping her small arms around his neck. "You're not mad?"
"I will never be mad at you for being scared," Daniel promised, rocking her gently. "We learn together."
