Chapter 15 - The Light We Found Together

On Sophie’s seventh birthday, they gathered on the shores of Lake Superior as the evening sun dipped below the water, casting a carpet of fiery orange and purple across the gentle waves.
Sophie wore a brand-new yellow sundress. She stood between Daniel and Elena, holding both of their hands, while Hope trotted along the shoreline chasing the white foam of the surf.
Daniel looked down at his daughter. Her cheeks were rosy, her hazel eyes sparkled with curiosity, and her smile was completely fearless. The memory of her kneeling by the cold metal pet bowl on the parquet floor seemed like a distant nightmare from another lifetime.
"Make a wish, birthday girl," Elena said softly, smoothing Sophie's hair away from her face.
Sophie looked out at the infinite expanse of water, took a deep breath of the crisp northern air, and smiled up at her parents. "I don't need to wish for anything anymore," she said, squeezing their hands tight. "I'm already home."

Daniel knelt down beside her, wrapping his arms around both his daughter and Elena against the cool evening breeze. The shadows of the past were long gone; the only thing remaining was the enduring warmth of a family reborn in love.
