Chapter 3 - The Confession of Maria

Evening fell over the city as the rain began to patter against the windowpanes of the motel room Daniel had rented on the outskirts of town. A sharp knock sounded at the door. Daniel opened it to reveal Maria, the family’s longtime housekeeper. She stood drenched, clutching a rain-soaked purse to her chest, her face pale with shame.

"Mr. Daniel," Maria said, her voice shaking as she entered the small room. She looked at Sophie, who was asleep on the corner bed clutching a clean fleece blanket. "I could not sleep. I could not stay in that house. I brought everything."

Maria opened her handbag and pulled out a worn spiral notebook alongside several flash drives. For months, Maria had lived under Evelyn’s continuous threats of reporting her immigrant relatives to authorities if she dared speak a word to Daniel. Yet, Maria had kept quiet records of every missed meal, every locked door, and every afternoon Sophie spent crying in the downstairs cellar.

"I am so sorry, señor," Maria wept, dropping to her knees by the small round table. "She told me you knew. She told me it was special behavioral therapy ordered by doctors. But when I saw her feeding that poor angel from the floor... my soul died. Here are the grocery receipts she made me fake, and the audio files I recorded on my cleaning phone."

Daniel looked at the woman, his anger momentarily giving way to deep sadness. Complicity born of fear was still complicity, but Maria had risked her safety to bring the evidence that would protect Sophie in the legal battle ahead. "Thank you, Maria," Daniel said softly, helping the trembling woman to her feet. "Tomorrow morning, we go to the district attorney’s office together. The truth will be spoken in the daylight."
