Chapter 12 - A Golden Retriever Named Hope

Back at the lakeside cabin, autumn leaves painted the hills in vibrant shades of gold and crimson. A floppy-eared, four-month-old golden retriever pup bolted across the grass, chasing a red rubber ball that Sophie had tossed with all her might.

"Get it, Hope! Get it!" Sophie’s laughter peeled across the lawn—bright, clear, and unburdened.

Daniel stood by the porch rail, holding a cup of hot cider, watching the scene alongside Elena. Over the past several months, Elena had moved into a small guest cottage down the road, visiting every afternoon, helping with homeschooling, and gently rebuilding the maternal bond that time and trauma had temporarily severed.

"She gained four pounds this month," Elena said, smiling through the quiet tears that often accompanied these milestones. "Her doctor says her bone density is recovering completely."

"She sleeps through the night now," Daniel added, looking at Elena with deep gratitude. "No nightmares. No hiding food under her mattress."

The puppy tumbled into Sophie’s lap, licking her nose and sending the little girl into a fit of breathless giggles. Sophie hugged the dog tight, her face buried in golden fur, completely immersed in the simple joy of an afternoon without fear.
