Chapter 11 - The Fall of the Facade

"Daddy, stop!"
Leo’s small voice pierced the roar of the surf. The boy broke free from Elena’s grasp and took two steps forward onto the slick planks. He held Clara’s wedding photo in his two hands, holding it up like a shield against his father.
"Mommy was good!" Leo cried, tears streaming down his small, rain-streaked face. "You made her cry! You made Elena cry! Why do you make everyone cry?"
Julian stopped in his tracks. For a fleeting second, the brutal machinery of his ambition jammed. He looked down at the photograph—at Clara’s youthful smile, untouched by the five years of bitterness and control that had followed. He looked at Leo, the child he had reduced to a political prop, now looking at him not with respect or obedience, but with pure, unadulterated fear.
"Leo..." Julian whispered, reaching out a trembling hand. "I... I did it all for you. For our legacy."
"You did it for yourself," Elena said, stepping beside the boy and placing her hand on his trembling shoulder. "Clara didn't die of high blood pressure, Julian. She died of loneliness and terror. And you were going to do the exact same thing to me."
Julian’s face darkened, the brief moment of human vulnerability instantly consumed by venomous pride. "Enough of this melodrama! Take the boy! Take the card from her!" he screamed to his guards.
Before the contractors could take a step, the blare of marine horns cut through the fog.
A high-powered searchlight flooded the pier from the water. A Coast Guard cutter, flanked by two state police tactical boats, emerged from the mist, their megaphones booming across the water:
"Julian Vance! This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Drop your weapons and step away from the civilians! The pier is completely surrounded!"

Flashing blue and red lights illuminated the entire shipyard perimeter as dozens of state troopers poured through the gate Ward had broken earlier. Ward had not placed the call to a landline; his phone had been transmitting a live satellite beacon to the U.S. Attorney’s task force since midnight.
Julian spun around, his mouth agape, the trap snapping shut around him.
