Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Frame

The quiet that followed Leo’s question felt heavier than Julian’s rage.
Julian stared down at the photograph in the boy’s hands. It was Clara, his first wife, who had died four years earlier under circumstances Julian preferred to bury under sealed court orders and generous philanthropic donations. When Clara had passed shortly after Leo’s birth, Julian had claimed she succumbed to post-partum complications. He had locked away every portrait, purged every trace of her from their estate, and instructed the domestic staff never to speak her name.
Yet here she was, smiling up from Elena’s suitcase.
"Where did you get that?" Julian demanded, his voice devoid of the earlier fury, replaced now by a sharp, defensive edge. He stepped away from Elena, leaning down toward the boy. "Leo, give that to me right now."
Leo shrank back, clutching the photograph against his floral Hawaiian shirt. "It’s the pretty lady in the attic box. Elena said she watches over me."
Elena pushed herself upright, fighting the dizzy spell that threatened to pull her under. She placed a tender hand on Leo’s shoulder, stepping deliberately between the child and his father’s reaching grasp.
"Don't take Clara away from him, Julian," Elena whispered, her voice finally steadying. "You tried to erase her because looking at her reminds you of how you treated her before the end. You won't do that to Leo. He deserves to know his mother was real, that she loved him."
"You have no right to meddle in my family’s past!" Julian hissed, grabbing Elena’s wrist. His grip tightened, bruising and calculated. "You were brought into this house to play hostess, to give Leo a mother figure, and to provide me a legitimate family image. You are an employee with a wedding ring, Elena. Nothing more."
The lobby supervisor, a dignified gray-haired woman named Beatrice, could no longer remain silent. Stepping out from behind the counter, she cleared her throat firmly. "Mr. Vance, hotel security is on standby. I must ask you to release your wife's arm immediately, or I will have the local authorities intervene."
Julian glared at Beatrice, his jaw working as if weighing the cost of a public scandal against his pride. Slowly, he uncurled his fingers from Elena’s skin.

"Check me into the presidential suite," Julian said coldly to Beatrice, smoothing his rumpled lapels. "Alone. My wife and the boy can find somewhere else to sleep."
With a swift kick, Julian shoved the open suitcase aside, turned on his heel, and strode toward the private elevator bank.
