Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Harbor

The Harbor Rose Inn sat nestled between weathered sea cliffs and a sleepy marina where fishing boats bobbed rhythmically against damp pilings. It was worlds away from the glass-and-steel penthouses Elena had grown accustomed to.

Beatrice’s sister, Martha, welcomed them with warm chamomile tea and a plate of buttered toast. For the first time in months, Elena felt her shoulders uncoil. Leo sat by the hearth, thoroughly engrossed in a box of old wooden building blocks, the photograph of his biological mother safely propped up on the mantelpiece beside him.

"You took a monumental risk, child," Martha said, setting a steaming mug before Elena. "Men like Vance don't handle loss well. Not because they cherish what they lost, but because they view people as property."

"I know," Elena murmured, cradling her teacup to warm her chilled palms. "I stayed because of Leo. When Julian brought me into his life three years ago, Leo was only one year old, completely neglected by rotating shifts of hired nannies. Julian saw a mother as a PR necessity. But Clara... Clara left behind journals, Martha. Secret journals that Julian thought were destroyed with her clothes."

Elena reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook with frayed corners. She opened it to a page dated five years ago, filled with Clara’s delicate, slanted handwriting.

"Clara didn't die of a sudden illness," Elena said, her voice trembling. "She was trapped, just like I was. Julian used shell corporations to bankrupt her family's business, isolated her from her friends, and when she found out about his illegal offshore financial transfers, he threatened to take Leo away completely. Her heart gave out from extreme stress and unmonitored preeclampsia—conditions Julian refused to let doctors treat until it was far too late."

Martha’s eyes widened with somber realization. "And the wedding photo Leo found?"

"In that photo, Clara had hidden a micro-SD card in the backing paper," Elena revealed. "She mailed it to her sister before she passed, and her sister gave it to me right before she died last spring. It has every transaction, every forged signature, and the proof that Julian deliberately withheld medical intervention. Julian saw the photo today and panicked. He doesn't know for sure that I have the key, but he suspects."

Suddenly, the headlights of an idling car swept across the living room curtains.
