Chapter 3 - An Unlikely Haven

The afternoon sun gave way to a twilight drenched in coastal fog. Elena sat on a wooden bench across the street from the hotel, her fingers entwined with Leo’s. Beside them was the battered brown suitcase, roughly zipped back up, containing the remnants of a life she could no longer return to.

Her phone vibrated relentlessly in her purse—Julian’s lawyers issuing stern warnings via text, followed by alerts that her credit cards had been unilaterally frozen. It was the standard playbook of a man who believed every human being had a price, and that cutting the purse strings would always bring a straying partner crawling back on their knees.

"Elena?" Leo whispered, looking up at her with clear, hazel eyes. "Is Daddy mad at me because of Mommy’s picture?"

Elena bent down, brushing a dark lock of hair from the boy’s forehead, swallowing the lump in her throat. "No, my sweet boy. Never you. Daddy is just... angry at the world. And sometimes people who are hurt inside hurt other people."

"Are we going home?"

Elena paused. Home had been a cold estate on the bluff, filled with surveillance cameras, locked doors, and Julian’s ever-shifting moods. Going back meant surrendering the unborn child kicking softly inside her womb to the same psychological cage Leo had grown up within.

"No, Leo," she said gently. "We're going on an adventure. Just for a little while."

A soft horn honked from the curb. An older blue sedan pulled up, its hazard lights blinking. Beatrice, the hotel manager who had intervened an hour earlier, rolled down the passenger window. She had changed out of her uniform jacket into a sensible cardigan.

"Get in, Elena," Beatrice called quietly. "My sister owns a bed-and-breakfast down near the old harbor. It's off the grid, quiet, and Julian Vance's security detail won't think to look there. You need a safe roof over your head tonight."

Elena hesitated, the instinct to distrust anyone tied to the Vance sphere kicking in. But seeing the genuine warmth in Beatrice’s tired eyes, Elena picked up the suitcase, took Leo by the hand, and opened the car door.
