Chapter 14 - A Home by the Cedar Pines

Spring arrived on the northern coast with an explosion of wild yellow mustard and sea lavender.

Two miles past Martha’s inn, tucked along a quiet cedar-lined lane overlooking the bay, sat a small white cottage with a wrap-around porch. It wasn't grand. It had no marble pillars, no uniformed concierges, and no cameras hidden in the cornices. But the windows opened wide to let in the fresh salt breeze, and the front yard was covered in soft green clover.

Leo, now five years old, was chasing a rescue golden retriever across the lawn, his bright laughter ringing clear through the afternoon sunshine.

On the porch, Elena sat in a wicker rocking chair, nursing baby Clara Grace. The baby had her father’s dark hair, but her mother’s wide, curious hazel eyes—eyes that would never know the cold terror of a slammed briefcase or a raised hand.

Beside the porch swing sat Detective Ward, whittling a small wooden sailboat from a piece of driftwood he had salvaged from the shipyard pier.

"Mail came today," Ward said, setting down his pocketknife and passing a thick manila envelope across the small table. "The probate court cleared the estate settlement. Julian’s remaining non-illicit assets have been restructured into an independent trust fund for Leo and Clara Grace. You have full stewardship until they come of age."

Elena looked down at the documents, then set them aside without opening them.

"We don't need much, Tom," she said softly. "The children have their school, their garden, and their peace. That money will be there for their education. For now, this porch is more than enough."

Ward chuckled, brushing wood shavings from his trousers. "You're a rare soul, Elena. Most people would have spent the rest of their lives extracting vengeance."

"Vengeance is just another way of letting him dictate our lives," Elena replied, looking out toward the horizon where the blue sky met the ocean. "True victory is forgetting how to be afraid."
