Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Circle of Grace

That evening, as the sun dipped behind the western headlands, painting the clouds in fiery amber and violet, Leo came running up the porch steps holding a freshly picked dandelion.
"Look, Elena!" he shouted, proudly presenting the yellow blossom. "It grew right between the stones! Martha said it’s tough because it never gives up."
Elena laughed, taking the flower and tucking it gently behind the boy’s ear. "Just like you, my sweet boy. Stronger than the stones."
She took Leo’s hand and led him inside the warm living room. Above the fireplace hung two framed photographs, side by side.
On the left was the picture Leo had pulled from the battered brown suitcase in the hotel lobby five months earlier—Clara in her radiant wedding dress, smiling with unconditional warmth.
On the right was a new photograph, taken the previous Sunday on the beach: Elena holding baby Clara Grace, with Leo perched on her hip, both of them laughing as the incoming tide splashed their bare feet.
Leo stood before the mantelpiece, looking quietly at both frames. He reached out his small hand, his fingers lightly tracing the glass of his mother’s portrait, before resting his other hand against Elena’s waist.
"Elena?" he asked softly.
"Yes, my love?"
"Mommy Clara looks happy in that picture."
"She is happy, Leo. Because she knows you are safe. She knows you are loved."
"And you’re my mommy too, right?"
Elena dropped to her knees, gathering Leo and the baby into a single, warm embrace. She rested her cheek against his soft brown hair, breathing in the scent of fresh ocean air, sunshine, and innocent childhood.

"Always, Leo," Elena whispered, her voice steady with a mother's eternal vow. "In every way that matters, in every breath I take, I am your mother. And nothing in this world will ever take you from the light again."
Outside, the ocean waves rolled rhythmically against the shore, steady and eternal, washing away the footprints of the past, leaving only clean, smooth sand for tomorrow’s journey.
