Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Door

The headlights lingered on the white gravel driveway before cutting off. Martha stood up swiftly, motioning for Elena and Leo to retreat into the rear pantry.
"Stay quiet," Martha whispered, reaching beside the hearth for an old brass fire poker.
Elena pulled Leo against her chest, crouching down behind shelves lined with jars of preserved fruit and flour sacks. Leo clutched his mother's sleeve, sensing the danger without making a sound. Elena’s unborn child gave a sharp flutter, responding to the adrenaline coursing through her bloodstream.
A rhythmic, heavy knock sounded at the front door. Three beats, deliberate and measured.
Martha unbolted the chain and cracked the door an inch. "We're closed for the season. You'll have to find lodging near the highway."
"I’m not looking for a room, Mrs. Gallagher," a low, gravelly voice answered from the dark porch. "I’m looking for Elena Vance. And before you call the sheriff, you should know Julian Vance hired three private investigator firms this evening. I work for one of them. But I’m not here to take her back."
Elena listened closely from the pantry. The voice didn't belong to the slick, corporate thugs Julian typically kept on retainer. It carried the weariness of a seasoned detective.
"Step into the porch light where I can see your hands," Martha ordered firmly.
A man stepped into the yellow amber glow of the lantern. He was in his late fifties, wearing a rumpled trench coat, an unkempt silver beard framing a face marked by deep creases. He slipped a leather wallet from his coat, flipping open an investigator’s license.
"My name is Thomas Ward," the man said. "Twenty-five years with the state police, five years private. Ten years ago, Clara’s father hired me to look into Julian Vance’s business dealings before she married him. I failed to stop that wedding. I’ve lived with that regret ever since."
Elena took a slow breath, gently letting go of Leo, and stepped out from the darkened pantry into the hallway.

"Mr. Ward?" Elena said softly.
The detective looked past Martha, his expression softening as he saw Elena’s guarded posture and protective hands over her stomach. "Mrs. Vance. You don't know me, but I knew Clara when she was just a bright-eyed college graduate. If you have what I think you have, we have forty-eight hours to reach the federal prosecutor’s office before Julian buys another judge."
