Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of Power

They gathered around the kitchen table under the hum of an overhead bulb. Detective Ward laid out a city map marked with several red pens.

"Julian is running for the state Senate seat next autumn," Ward explained, taking a sip of black coffee. "His campaign hinges on his image as a devoted widower, a successful self-made tycoon, and a family man who rebuilt his life. If you vanish into hiding, he’ll spin it as an unstable wife running off with his heir. He’s already filed an emergency petition for sole custody of both Leo and the unborn child, citing mental instability on your part."

Elena’s hands trembled with indignation. "He knows I’m sane. He knows I have Clara’s documents."

"Which is why he can't afford to let you talk to anyone who isn't bought," Ward replied. "Julian’s empire isn't built on concrete and real estate; it's built on leveraged debt, laundered overseas trusts, and institutional fear. When Clara discovered his third-tier holding company—Vance Maritime Holdings—she found records showing he was funneling money from sanctioned ports. When she threatened to turn him in, he isolated her in their mountain cabin, cut off her phone lines, and kept her doctor away when her blood pressure spiked."

Leo crept over to the table and handed the photograph of Clara to Detective Ward. "My mom was pretty," the boy whispered.

Ward looked down at the photo, his weathered eyes clouding with an old sorrow. He gently pulled back the brown paper backing, revealing the tiny, black micro-SD card nestled within the frame’s cardboard border.

"She was brilliant, Leo," Ward murmured gently. "And she was brave. Just like Elena."

Ward looked up at Elena. "The data on this card, combined with the sworn testimonies Clara recorded before her health failed, is enough to trigger a federal racketeering and manslaughter indictment. But Julian has informants in the local precinct. We cannot go to the county sheriff. We have to deliver this evidence directly to the U.S. Attorney’s office in the capital."

"That’s three hundred miles away," Elena said, her hand pressing against the dull ache in her lower back. "And I can barely walk without getting winded."

"Then we leave tonight," Ward said, standing up. "Before the dawn patrols hit the interstate."
