Chapter 1 - The Broken Doll

The polished Italian marble of the Vanderbilt estate hallway felt like dry ice beneath Frank Mendez’s calloused knees. He didn't blink. His gaze remained locked on Elena’s pale, slack face. The faint purple bruise blossoming across her delicate jawbone looked obscene against her fair skin, a vicious reminder of what wealth could buy and destroy in the dark. Beside her limp fingertips lay a glass syringe with traces of clear blue synthetic sedative, catching the glow of the chandelier overhead.

Behind them stood Evelyn Vanderbilt, draped in champagne silk, her manicured hand clutching the doorframe. Her emerald ring clinked against the carved wood, shivering with unmistakable terror. But down the corridor, bare feet slapping casually against the tile, was Daniel.

""She's my wife, Mendez,"" Daniel repeated, pulling the belt of his dark silk dressing robe tighter around his narrow waist. His handsome features were warped by sheer, untamed arrogance. He ran a hand through his slicked-back dark hair, smirking as if this were nothing more than a spilled glass of Scotch. ""You work for us. You fix our engines, you check our perimeter, and you clean up our messes. Pick her up and put her back in the master suite before I call the private security detail to put a hole through your thick skull.""

Frank slowly shifted his weight. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't even stand up immediately. With tender, weathered hands, he slipped two fingers beneath Elena’s jawline, searching for a pulse. It was there—weak, erratic, fluttering like a trapped hummingbird against a windowpane. She groaned softly, her eyelids fluttering open just enough to reveal unfocused amber irises.

""Frank..."" she whispered, the syllable barely audible over the hum of the central heating.

""I’m right here, kid,"" Frank murmured, his voice rumbling low in his chest. ""You're getting out of here.""

""I gave you an order, mechanic!"" Daniel barked, taking two aggressive strides forward. His finger stabbed the air between them. ""She signed the prenup! She signed the non-disclosure! My father owns every breath in her body, and so do I! Step away from her right now!""

Frank rose. He was a broad-shouldered mountain of a man, carved out of thirty years of back-alley street combat and covert black-ops work long before he ever picked up a wrench for the Vanderbilt family. His worn khaki shirt pulled tight across his chest as he stood to his full six-foot-two height, casting a long, impenetrable shadow over the unconscious girl on the floor.

Evelyn gasped from the doorway. ""Daniel, stop... you don't know who he used to be—""

""Quiet, Mother!"" Daniel hissed, not breaking eye contact with Frank. ""He’s a hired hand. Nothing more.""

Frank's hand reached under the front flap of his jacket. He withdrew a heavy, matte-black Glock 19, the slide racked with a clean, metallic clack that echoed like thunder through the empty corridor. The sneer on Daniel’s face evaporated, replaced by a sudden, sickening paleness.

""Your father lied to you, Daniel,"" Frank said, his thumb flicking off the safety. ""He didn't hire me to fix his vintage cars. He hired me ten years ago as an insurance policy. In case the sickness in this house ever reached past the gates.""

From the end of the hall, the estate’s heavy security doors unlocked with a deafening hydraulic hiss. Heavy combat boots began pounding up the grand staircase.

Frank didn't look back. He lowered the barrel directly toward Daniel's chest. ""Looks like your father's hounds are here. Let's see who they answer to first.""
