Chapter 3 - Blood on the Asphalt

The storm was tearing through the Hudson Valley, lashing the estate's sprawling gardens with sheets of freezing rain. Frank carried Elena down the back service stairs, bypassing the main foyer where the courtyard ambush was already closing in. His tactical boots were silent against the iron steps, every sense honed to a lethal edge.
Elena stirred against his chest, her skin burning with an unnatural fever. ""The... the flash drive..."" she mumbled, her fingers clutching his soaked sleeve. ""It’s in... my locket...""
""Save your breath, Elena. Just stay with me,"" Frank muttered.
He kicked open the heavy metal door leading into the underground six-car garage. The room smelled of premium gasoline, motor oil, and cold concrete. Underneath fluorescent strips sat a row of multimillion-dollar exotics—cars Daniel collected like trophies. But tucked in the far corner, concealed under a dusty canvas tarp, sat a customized 1987 Chevy Suburban, armored with B6 ballistic steel and reinforced run-flat tires.
Frank laid Elena gently across the reinforced back bench seat, wrapping a wool emergency blanket around her shivering frame. He popped the trunk compartment and ripped open an emergency trauma kit, grabbing a vial of Naloxone. Guessing the chemical cocktail Daniel had used, he jammed the autoinjector through her thin nightgown into her thigh.
Elena gasped violently, arching off the leather as the antagonist flooded her bloodstream, clearing the synthetic opioid haze. She coughed, choking for air, her amber eyes widening in raw terror. ""Frank! He... he tried to kill me...""
""Not today,"" Frank said, slamming the rear door shut.
He jumped behind the wheel and turned the heavy brass key. The customized 454 big-block engine roared to life with a ferocious, earth-shaking rumble. He hit the button for the underground security gate, but the mechanism groaned and sparked—someone had severed the hydraulic lines from the control room.
Above them, the ceiling shook. Boots were clattering down the garage ramp. Through the reinforced windshield, Frank saw three men in rain slickers raise tactical shotguns, leveling them right at the Suburban.
Frank didn't hesitate. He slammed the gear selector into drive, mashed his foot against the floorboard, and unleashed over six hundred horsepower.
The heavy truck surged forward like an enraged bull. The first guard barely dove out of the way before the steel battering ram attached to the Suburban's front bumper obliterated the garage’s reinforced security gate. Metal tore with an ear-splitting shriek, sparks cascading across the hood like fireworks as the vehicle burst into the rainy courtyard.

Shots immediately pinged against the bulletproof glass, leaving white starburst fractures that held firm. Frank whipped the wheel hard to the left, ramming the side of the lead black SUV that was blocking the iron driveway gates. The impact sent the SUV spinning onto two wheels, clearing a narrow opening just wide enough for Frank to squeeze through.
Tires screaming against wet asphalt, the Suburban blasted through the ornate wrought-iron gates, shattering them into twisted scrap metal. Frank checked his rearview mirror as he hit the dark mountain road. Behind them, red taillights flickered on, and two high-powered sniper beams locked onto the rear window.
