Chapter 6 - The Architect of Shadows

The twin 500-horsepower inboard engines thrummed with a low, vibrating hum as the boat cut through the choppy dark waters of the Hudson. The spray of cold river water stung Frank’s face, washing away the gunpowder residue and grime from the firefight. Elena sat huddled in the cabin below, wrapped in a heavy wool pea coat, holding a mug of black coffee with both hands as if searching for warmth that wouldn't come.

Up on the open deck, the lawyer, Arthur Sterling, stood with his hands tucked into the pockets of his tailored cashmere overcoat, utterly unbothered by the driving rain. He was a man in his late sixties, with slick gray hair and eyes as cold and calculating as an actuary's balance sheet.

""Victor is deteriorating quickly in Zurich,"" Sterling said, his voice cutting cleanly through the wind. ""His kidneys are failing. He knows he won't survive the winter. That is precisely why Daniel has become so reckless. The boy senses the vacuum of power.""

""Daniel isn't a boy,"" Frank replied, his Glock holstered but his hand never straying far from the grip. ""He's a rabid sociopath who thinks money makes him a god. He poisoned Elena, Sterling. He had her drugged in the hallway like cattle.""

Sterling sighed, a thin plume of vapor trailing into the night air. ""Elena was an outsider who married into the dynasty. She was supposed to play the decorative wife, smile at galas, and keep her eyes shut. Instead, she decided to play forensic accountant. What did she think was going to happen?""

""She thought laws applied to people like you,"" Frank spat.

""Laws are constructed by men with capital to protect their capital,"" Sterling said smoothly, handing Frank a secure satellite phone. ""Victor wants to speak to you. He wants this contained before the market opens at nine o’clock this morning. If the cartel ties hit the Bloomberg terminals, the stock crashes by eighty percent. The banks will call in the margins, and the entire empire unravels.""

Frank pressed the phone to his ear. A ragged, mechanical breath wheezed through the speaker, accompanied by the steady beep of a hospital heart monitor.

""Frank..."" Victor Vanderbilt’s voice sounded like dry leaves scraping across a stone floor. ""My son... is a monster of my own creation. I gave him too much, too soon. But he is still my blood.""

""He tried to kill your daughter-in-law, Victor. He sent twenty men to murder me in the depot,"" Frank said flatly.

""I am aware,"" Victor wheezed. ""I want you to bring him to me. Alive. Let me look him in the eye before I sign the papers disowning him and handing the board over to an independent trust. Do that, Frank, and ten million dollars will be wired to your offshore account within the hour. Elena gets full immunity, twenty million in a blind trust, and a new identity anywhere in the world.""

Frank looked down through the hatchway at Elena. She looked small, broken, and terrified. She deserved a life away from this rot.

""Where is he now?"" Frank asked.

""He retreated to the Manhattan penthouse on 57th Street,"" Victor replied. ""He has barricaded himself with sixty private security guards. He thinks he’s untouchable up on the eighty-second floor.""

Frank stared at the distant Manhattan skyline rising through the rain like a forest of glowing gravestones. ""He’s wrong.""
