Chapter 4 - The Safe Harbor

The mountain road was a treacherous ribbon of slick switchbacks winding through dense pine forests. Rain drummed deafeningly against the steel roof of the Suburban. In the rearview mirror, Frank watched the twin headlights of their pursuers fade as he killed his own running lights, relying on a thermal night-vision HUD mounted above the steering wheel to guide him through the pitch-black curves.
Fifteen miles south of the estate, he veered off the main highway onto an unmarked gravel trail that led deep into the abandoned industrial district near the Hudson River. He pulled into the rusted skeleton of an old railcar depot, tucking the truck deep inside an overgrown warehouse where satellite surveillance couldn't penetrate.
Frank shut the engine down. The silence in the cavernous building was suffocating, broken only by the drip of rainwater through the cracked corrugated roof and Elena's ragged breathing.
He climbed into the back. Elena was sitting up, trembling violently, clutching her knees to her chest. The bruise on her jaw had darkened to a deep plum color, and her lips were cracked, but the clarity in her eyes proved the Naloxone had done its job.
""Drink this,"" Frank said, handing her a stainless steel flask filled with clean water and electrolytes.
She took it with shaking hands, drinking greedily before wiping her mouth on her sleeve. ""He found the bank statements, Frank. Daniel wasn't just skimming from the family foundation. He’s laundering cartel money through the shipping docks in Newark. Tens of millions of dollars every single week.""
Frank pulled a folding knife from his pocket and gently gestured to the silver locket around her neck. ""Is this what he was tearing your room apart for?""
Elena nodded slowly, unhooking the delicate chain. She opened the locket to reveal a micro-SD card glued into the hollow backing. ""Everything is on here. The shell companies, the shipping manifests, the names of dirty port officials. Even two senators who are on his payroll.""
""This isn't just about Daniel anymore,"" Frank said, turning the tiny memory card over in his rough fingers. ""If this leaks, Vanderbilt Global collapses. Thousands of people go to prison. That's why Victor hired me to watch you. He knew his son was a rabid dog, but he didn't have the stomach to put him down himself.""
""What are we going to do?"" Elena whispered, tears finally breaking past her fierce composure. ""They have limitless money, Frank. The police, the courts, the private armies... they own all of them. Where can we possibly hide?""
""We don't hide,"" Frank said, his voice cold and devoid of fear. ""Hiding just means dying tired. We take away their weapons one by one.""

Before he could finish his sentence, the faint, high-pitched whine of an approaching drone buzzed outside the warehouse windows. Frank peered through the grime-covered glass. A military-grade quadcopter with a thermal camera was hovering fifty feet above the rail tracks, circling the warehouse like a vulture.
Frank racked the slide of his rifle. ""They tracked the truck’s transponder. We’ve got three minutes before the hit squad arrives.""
