Chapter 14 - Sins of the Father

Sterling's men panicked. The guard on the left swung his submachine gun toward the perimeter floodlights, firing a frantic, wild burst into the glare.
It was the last mistake he ever made.
A single sniper round cracked through the fog from the gantry crane above, dropping the guard instantly onto the wet gravel. The second guard immediately threw his weapon into the dark water of the bay and dropped to his knees, pressing his face against the dirt with his hands behind his head.
Sterling stood frozen, his silk scarf fluttering in the cold wind, the color completely drained from his aristocratic face. He looked at Frank, his breath catching in his throat.
""You... you went to the feds?"" Sterling stammered, disbelief cracking his polished voice. ""You handed them the black ledger? That exposes you too, Frank! Your covert work, your black-ops contracts... you’ll spend the rest of your life in ADX Florence!""
""Check the clearance codes, Arthur,"" Frank said, closing the distance between them until he was standing inches from the terrified lawyer. ""The ledger wasn't handed to the feds by Frank Mendez the mechanic. It was declassified by Colonel Frank Mendez, United States Special Operations Command, retired.""
Sterling stumbled backward against the town car, his knees buckling. ""You... you were undercover... the entire time?""
""Victor Vanderbilt thought he hired an old soldier looking for a paycheck,"" Frank said, his voice dropping to a harsh, gravelly whisper. ""The Pentagon placed me inside his circle ten years ago to map the shadow network. Victor was smart; he kept me isolated on the perimeter. But when Daniel attacked Elena, the timeline moved up.""
Federal agents in windbreakers swarmed the pier, weapons drawn, shouting commands as they pinned Sterling against the hood of his town car and cuffed him roughly.
Agent Miller, the lead investigator on the task force, walked up to Frank, extending a hand. ""Clean sweep, Colonel. We’ve seized the servers in Singapore and the offshore bank accounts in Zurich. The entire Vanderbilt shadow syndicate is dismantled.""
Frank shook the agent's hand briefly. ""And Elena?""
""Fully cleared,"" Miller confirmed. ""She cooperated with full disclosure. The charitable trust is legally protected, and her inheritance is secure. She’s waiting for you at the safe house in upstate New York.""

Frank took a deep breath of the cold salt air, feeling a weight that had pressed against his chest for a decade finally lift. The ghosts of the Vanderbilt family had finally been laid to rest. He turned his back on the flashing blue and red emergency lights, walking away from the docks as the morning mist began to clear.
He had one final promise to keep.
