Chapter 7 - The Gilded Fortress

The penthouse at 432 Park Avenue loomed over the city like a monument to hubris. Outside the bronze-and-glass lobby, private security stood shoulder to shoulder, checking identification and sweeping vehicles with explosive detectors. Daniel had effectively turned the top three floors into an armed redoubt, sealing off the private elevators and cutting off the penthouse staircase with reinforced steel security gates.
Inside the sprawling living room, surrounded by modern art worth tens of millions, Daniel paced back and forth across the polished herringbone floors. He had changed into a tailored charcoal suit, but his tie was undone, and his hands shook as he poured his fourth glass of vintage bourbon.
""What do you mean they lost them at the river?!"" Daniel screamed into his phone, smashing the crystal tumbler against a marble fireplace. The glass shattered violently, sending bourbon splashing over a priceless original Basquiat.
On the couch sat Marcus Kane, the ruthless head of Vanderbilt Global’s private enforcement wing. Kane was a mountain of a man with cold gray eyes and a jagged scar tracking across his throat, wearing a tight black tactical polo.
""Mendez has thirty years of experience disappearing in hostile territory,"" Kane said calmly, chewing on an unlit cigar. ""Your father trained him. You thought you could take him out with a bunch of local contractors? You're lucky he didn't put a bullet between your eyes in the hallway.""
""My father is dying!"" Daniel snarled, lunging forward and grabbing Kane by his tactical harness. ""I run this company now! You work for me! Do you understand? When my father dies, I sign your checks!""
Kane slowly reached up, grabbed Daniel’s wrist, and peeled his fingers away with enough pressure to make Daniel wince. ""Your father’s signature still clears the escrow account, kid. And right now, Mendez is hunting you. If I were you, I’d stop breaking glasses and check your perimeter.""
Down on 57th Street, Frank sat in the passenger seat of an unmarked white utility van, wearing a navy blue city maintenance jumpsuit. Elena sat in the back, monitoring three different police scanners and a laptop displaying the building's electrical schematics, which Sterling had provided.
""The building has dedicated backup generators on the sub-basement level,"" Elena said, her voice steady now, fueled by adrenaline and spite. ""If we cut the main transformer from the street, it takes twelve seconds for the generators to kick in. During those twelve seconds, the biometric locks on the private elevators fail-safe into an open position.""
""Twelve seconds is a long time,"" Frank said, strapping two flash-bangs to his chest rig.
""Daniel thinks he's safe up there because no one can get up the elevator,"" Elena added, looking at Frank with fierce determination. ""He doesn't know you have the override codes.""
Frank adjusted his earpiece. ""Stay in the van, Elena. Keep the engine running. If I’m not down in twenty minutes, drive straight to the federal building in Lower Manhattan and hand the flash drive to Agent Miller. Don't look back.""

Elena reached out, catching his wrist before he could open the door. Her amber eyes were fierce. ""Make him pay for what he did to me, Frank.""
""He will,"" Frank said softly. He slipped out into the pouring rain and melted into the shadow of the skyscraper.
