Chapter 11 - The Reckoning at Dawn

Stepping out of the elevator were two federal agents in dark windbreakers, led by Arthur Sterling and Elena.

Elena walked into the wind-battered penthouse, the rain soaking her hair, but her spine was straight and her gaze was unwavering. She looked down at Daniel, who was still groveling on the floor, clinging to the carpet like a drowning man.

""Elena..."" Daniel whimpered, reaching toward her. ""Baby, please... tell them. It was a misunderstanding. I was stressed... the merger...""

Elena looked at him with an expression devoid of any love, anger, or pity. It was the look one gave to a cockroach before stepping on it.

""The federal prosecutor has already reviewed the offshore manifests, Daniel,"" Elena said, her voice clear and cutting through the storm. ""They’ve issued forty-seven arrest warrants across three continents. Your mother is already in federal custody in Westchester. And Victor..."" She paused, looking at Sterling.

Sterling stepped forward, holding a tablet displaying a live news broadcast. The banner across the bottom read: VICTOR VANDERBILT, TITAN OF INDUSTRY, PASSES AWAY IN ZURICH AT 78.

Daniel stared at the screen, his entire world collapsing around him in a fraction of a second. ""No... no, no, no! He couldn't die yet! The trust hasn't transferred! The power of attorney—""

""Before Victor passed,"" Sterling interrupted coldly, ""he executed his final will and testament. Having discovered your attempt to murder his daughter-in-law and launder money for international cartels, he invoked the morals clause. You have been completely disinherited, Daniel. Not a single cent of the Vanderbilt estate will ever bear your name.""

""Who gets it?!"" Daniel screamed, his face turning purple with rage. ""Who gets my money?!""

Sterling gestured toward Elena. ""The entire estate, including all controlling shares of Vanderbilt Global, has been placed into an irrevocable charitable trust, administered solely by Elena Vance-Vanderbilt.""

Daniel lunged forward with an animalistic roar, his hands clawing toward Elena's throat. ""I'll kill you! I'll kill you with my bare hands!""

He never made it two feet.

Frank stepped in front of Elena, his boot planting squarely into Daniel’s chest, sending him sprawling backward onto the wet marble. The two federal agents immediately swarmed him, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

""Daniel Vanderbilt,"" the lead agent recited, hauling the heir to his feet. ""You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit treason, and racketeering. You have the right to remain silent...""

As they dragged Daniel kicking and screaming into the elevator, Elena stood by the shattered window, watching the first light of dawn break through the storm clouds over the Atlantic Ocean. The rain was finally stopping.

Frank stood beside her, wiping the rain and blood from his knuckles. ""It’s over, Elena.""

She turned to him, her eyes shining with quiet tears. ""It’s not over, Frank. Now I have to rebuild everything they destroyed.""

May you like

She looked at him with profound gratitude. ""Will you stay? Not as a bodyguard. As my partner.""

Frank looked down at his calloused, blood-stained hands, then out at the rising sun. ""I have one more debt to collect first.""
