Chapter 2 - The Red Perimeter

The sound of tactical boots striking marble grew louder, accompanied by the sharp clicks of suppressed submachine guns being readied. Four private contractors in black tactical gear burst into the second-floor landing, their weapon-mounted flashlights cutting harsh, blinding beams through the corridor.
""Hold your fire!"" Daniel screamed, retreating half a step toward the wall, his bravado returning in a desperate surge. ""Mendez has gone rogue! He drew down on me! Drop him right now!""
The lead operative, a scarred veteran named Vance, slowed his pace. His rifle was trained dead center on Frank’s chest, but as his flashlight caught Frank’s face, Vance froze. The laser sight danced on Frank's sternum, unwavering, yet Vance’s trigger finger remained straight along the guard.
""Lower the weapon, Mendez,"" Vance said through his comm headset, his voice flat. ""Contract says we protect the family.""
""Then check your updated ledger, Vance,"" Frank said calmly, keeping his own gun leveled between Daniel's eyes. ""Clause nine. Retainer override.""
Vance’s eyes narrowed behind his ballistic goggles. He tapped the radio on his shoulder. ""Command, this is Vance. Confirm status on Asset One.""
A tense, suffocating silence gripped the hall. Elena shifted on the floor, letting out a sharp gasp of agony as her bruised ribs scraped against the tile. Daniel watched the hesitation on his own guards' faces, veins bulging along his neck. ""What the hell are you doing?! Shoot him! I am the heir to Vanderbilt Global! Shoot this bastard!""
The radio crackled back with a voice that sent a chill through the room—not the head of private security, but Victor Vanderbilt himself, speaking from an undisclosed medical facility in Zurich.
""Vance... stand down. If Frank Mendez is pulling iron inside my home, Daniel has violated the trust.""
Daniel’s jaw dropped. ""Dad?! Are you insane? She was going to go to the federal marshals! She had the offshore ledgers on a flash drive!""
""And you decided to poison her to shut her up,"" Frank growled, stepping forward. He fired once.
The hollow-point bullet shattered the marble tile two inches from Daniel's bare toes, kicking sharp stone shards into his shins. Daniel shrieked, stumbling backward and collapsing against the wall, clutching his bleeding legs. Evelyn let out a muffled sob and vanished into her suite, locking the heavy mahogany door from the inside.
Frank scooped Elena into his left arm with effortless strength. She weighed almost nothing, her head lolling against his shoulder, her breaths shallow and ragged.
""Vance,"" Frank said, looking directly at the contractor. ""Are you going to try and stop me?""
Vance stood silent for two agonizing seconds, then lowered the muzzle of his rifle toward the floor. He signaled his men to clear the hallway. ""You have five minutes before the local precinct gets an anonymous distress call. After that, we didn't see anything.""
Frank carried Elena past the row of armored guards without another word. As he reached the top of the grand marble staircase, Daniel screamed from the floor, his voice cracking with pure venom:

""You won't make it past the front gate, Mendez! Look out the window!""
Frank glanced toward the two-story glass arch over the main entryway. Outside in the driving midnight rain, two black SUVs had just barricaded the courtyard exit, their high beams illuminating a dozen armed men stepping out into the storm.
