Chapter 1 - The Mark of the Past

The heavy silence in the grand gallery was louder than the crack of the whip that had nearly fallen seconds before. Julian Sterling stood towering over the trembling maid, his chest rising and falling beneath his immaculate velvet tuxedo. At his feet lay the discarded riding crop, its dark leather gleaming against the polished marble floor. Beside them, Lady Victoria clutched the lapels of her champagne silk gown, her face pale with indignity and simmering spite.
""Where did you get that pendant, Elena?"" Julian asked again, his voice dropping into an octave so low and dangerous it seemed to vibrate through the floorboards.
Elena swallowed past the lump lodged in her throat. She instinctively brought her small, calloused fingers up to shield the delicate silver piece resting against the collar of her maid’s uniform. It was a teardrop-shaped talisman, etched with a crest long thought vanished from high society. ""It was... it belonged to my mother, sir,"" she whispered, her voice fragile as spun glass. ""She told me never to take it off.""
""Your mother was a thieving peasant who probably took it from the laundry quarters decades ago!"" Victoria spat, stepping forward, her eyes flashing with venom. ""Julian, darling, you cannot believe this little liar. She stole into the private wing, and now she flaunts family heirlooms right in our faces. Call the police and throw her into the streets where she belongs!""
Julian didn’t even look at his fiancée. His dark gaze remained pinned entirely to Elena. He took one deliberate step closer, invading her space until she could smell the rich, smoky scent of cedarwood and whiskey radiating from him. With agonizing slowness, he reached out a gloved hand and gently lifted the silver charm between his fingers.
As he turned it over, the flickering candlelight caught the underside. Julian’s pupils contracted violently. Engraved into the silver was an intertwined letter 'S' and a single, haunting date: October 14th, 2004.
""Who was she?"" Julian demanded, his voice suddenly stripped of all its cold arrogance, replaced by an unsettling tremor. ""Tell me her name, Elena. Right now.""

Elena shrank beneath his intensity, fresh tears spilling over her dark eyelashes. She parted her lips to answer, but before the name could escape her tongue, the heavy oaken double doors at the far end of the hall swung open with a deafening crash, revealing Julian’s iron-willed father standing in the doorway, supported by an ornate cane.
""Release that girl, Julian,"" Lord Sterling’s voice boomed across the vast gallery like thunder. ""Or you will destroy everything this family has built.""
