Chapter 3 - The Locked Wing

Elena bolted through the darkened hallways of Sterling Manor, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The opulence of the mansion felt suffocating now—the towering oil paintings of solemn ancestors seemed to follow her every step with cold, judging eyes. She bypassed the servants' stairwell, taking the grand mahogany staircase straight up to the third floor, just as Julian had commanded.
The third floor was a forbidden realm. Ever since Elena had begun working here six months ago, Head Housekeeper Mrs. Gable had repeated one cardinal rule: Never set foot on the third floor after sunset. It was where Julian kept his private quarters and where his mother’s old suites remained boarded up and sealed in eternal grief.
Reaching the heavy oak doors of the master study, Elena turned the brass handle and slipped inside. The room smelled of old paper, leather-bound books, and faint pipe tobacco. Giant floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the vast, rain-slicked gardens of the estate. Elena quickly engaged the heavy brass lock, leaning back against the wooden door to catch her breath.
She looked down at her hands, still shaking uncontrollably. Her fingers touched the silver teardrop resting over her apron. For years, she had worn it tucked beneath her clothes, a simple keepsake from a mother whose face she could barely remember. Why had the sight of it turned Julian Sterling—the most ruthless corporate titan in the city—into someone who looked as though he had seen a ghost?
Drawn by an inexplicable curiosity, Elena began to look around the dim room. A single green banker's lamp illuminated Julian’s expansive desk. Beside an open ledger lay a set of keys with ornate, antique teeth. Next to them was an old, faded portrait in a gilded oval frame.
Elena moved closer, drawn by an invisible thread. She picked up the portrait. The woman depicted had dark, flowing hair and warm, expressive hazel eyes that mirrored Elena's own with terrifying precision. Standing behind the woman was a young Lord Sterling, smiling proudly.

A sudden click sounded from the far wall.
Elena gasped, spinning around. A concealed bookshelf had swung slightly ajar, revealing a narrow, dust-choked corridor illuminated by a single flickering red emergency light. From deep within the hidden passage, a low, mechanical humming drifted out, accompanied by the distinct sound of a woman weeping softly in the dark.
