Chapter 5 - Blood and Deceit

Elena spun around to see Julian standing at the entrance of the subterranean chamber. His velvet jacket was unbuttoned, his tie loosened, and his knuckles were bloody, as though he had just slammed his fists through a pane of glass. Behind him, the heavy iron door was bolted shut.
""Julian..."" Elena backed away until her shoulders hit the cold glass wall of the enclosure. ""What is this place? What are you keeping down here?""
Julian didn't look angry with her; instead, his face held a profound, hollow exhaustion. He walked past her and pressed his palm against the glass, matching the print of the woman inside. The older woman wept silently, touching her son’s silhouette through the barrier.
""My father told the world she died in a carriage crash when I was ten years old,"" Julian murmured, his gaze fixed on his mother. ""He had a funeral. He buried an empty casket. And all along, he kept her down here, pumped full of sedatives to keep her quiet, all to seize her family fortune and keep her silence.""
""Her silence about what?"" Elena asked, dread pooling in her stomach.
Julian turned his head to look at Elena, his piercing blue eyes catching the dim emergency light. ""About you.""
The chamber went deathly still. The only sound was the steady, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor inside the glass enclosure.
""Me?"" Elena gasped, shaking her head in denial. ""I'm just a maid. I grew up in an orphanage in the lower districts. My mother died when I was seven!""
""Your mother didn't die of illness, Elena,"" Julian said softly, stepping toward her with deliberate care, as if approaching a frightened animal. ""Clara was my mother's younger sister. The true heiress to the Sterling estate. When she became pregnant out of wedlock, my father threatened to destroy her. She fled with you, taking only her half of the family heirloom—the silver pendant around your neck.""
He reached into his pocket and pulled out an identical silver teardrop. When he brought it close to Elena’s chest, the two charms snapped together with a soft magnetic click, forming a complete crest—a blooming silver rose encircled by thorns.
""You aren't a servant in this house, Elena,"" Julian said, his voice raw with emotion. ""You own half of it. And my father will kill you before he lets you claim it.""

Suddenly, the red lights flickered and died. A harsh klaxon blared overhead, and the sound of heavy metal shutters descending slammed through the vents.
""Julian!"" a voice crackled through an overhead intercom—it was Victoria. ""Lord Sterling has cut the oxygen to the sublevel. You have five minutes to bring me that girl, or you both suffocate in the dark.""
