Chapter 11 - The Wolf and the Heiress

The high-end boutique in the city’s financial district was completely deserted at dawn, opened exclusively at gunpoint and with a roll of hundred-dollar bills. Julian leaned against the marble counter, watching as the terrified tailor made the final alterations to Elena’s attire.
When Elena stepped out from behind the velvet curtain, Julian’s breath caught in his throat.
The torn maid's uniform and scuffed sneakers were gone. In their place, Elena wore a breathtaking midnight-blue silk gown that hugged her slender frame, cascading into an elegant train behind her. Her dark hair was swept up into an intricate, regal chignon, exposing the delicate curve of her neck. And resting prominently against her collarbone was the united Sterling rose pendant, polished until it gleamed like liquid starlight.
""Does it look... ridiculous?"" Elena asked nervously, smoothing the silk with trembling hands. ""I feel like an imposter pretending to be a queen.""
Julian crossed the room, his long strides deliberate, until he stood inches from her. He reached out, his fingers brushing a loose curl from her cheek. ""You aren't an imposter, Elena. You carry the blood of the true founders of this city. When you walk into that room, look down on them. Because every single person in that boardroom owes their wealth to your mother's lineage.""
Elena looked up into his intense blue eyes. In the reflection of his gaze, she didn't see a frightened orphan girl anymore. She saw someone who had survived poverty, hunger, and cruelty, only to stand unbroken.
""What about you?"" Elena asked, adjusting the silk lapel of Julian’s freshly tailored charcoal suit. ""You're walking into a trap, Julian. Your father will have his snipers waiting.""
""Let them wait,"" Julian whispered, his hand lingering against the side of her face. For a brief second, the tension between them shifted from tactical survival to an electric, simmering intimacy. He leaned in slightly, his thumb grazing her lower lip. ""I spent my life playing the obedient heir to a corrupt king. Today, I burn his kingdom to the ground. But only if you're by my side.""
""I'm not leaving you,"" Elena promised, her voice steady and resolute.

Julian nodded, pulling back with professional restraint, though the heat in his eyes lingered. He checked his gold watch: 9:45 AM.
""Fifteen minutes until the board convenes,"" Julian said, offering her his arm. ""Let's go claim your birthright.""
