Chapter 6 - Suffocation and Secrets

The air in the subterranean bunker grew instantly thin, chilled by the damp stone walls and poisoned by the sudden lack of ventilation. Elena coughed, clutching Julian’s forearm in the darkness. The only illumination came from the faint green glow of the medical monitors inside the glass chamber, where Julian’s mother lay unconscious, having slipped into a sedative-induced sleep.

""We have to get her out,"" Elena choked out, panic threatening to overwhelm her senses. ""We can't leave her here!""

""The glass is reinforced ballistic polymer,"" Julian said grimly, his hand finding hers in the dark. His grip was surprisingly warm, steadying her frantic pulse. ""The seal won't break without the master override code from the terminal upstairs. If we try to smash it, the internal atmospheric depressurization will kill her instantly.""

""Then what do we do?"" Elena asked, tears stinging her eyes as the lack of oxygen began to make her temples throb. ""They've trapped us.""

Julian pulled an old service revolver from the inside lining of his velvet coat, checking the cylinder by the faint green light. ""My father designed this bunker during the Cold War. He thinks there’s only one way in and one way out. But when I was a boy, before my mother disappeared, I used to play in the utility shafts beneath the cellar.""

He led Elena to the far corner of the room, behind a massive server rack. With a heavy grunt of exertion, Julian wrenched a rusted iron ventilation grate off the wall, revealing a pitch-black chute that descended at a terrifying angle into the foundation of the estate.

""This leads to the old drainage tunnels beneath the riverbank,"" Julian instructed, pulling Elena in front of him. ""You slide first. Keep your arms tucked against your chest. When you hit the bottom, do not stop running until you reach the old boathouse.""

""What about you?"" Elena cried, holding onto his lapels. ""You're coming with me!""

Julian looked down at her, a strange, unreadable shadow crossing his chiseled features. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek. ""I have to buy you time to reach the gate. Victoria didn't seal this wing alone; she has security guards surrounding the perimeter.""

""I'm not leaving you to die!""

May you like

""You aren't leaving me, Elena. You're surviving,"" Julian whispered fiercely. ""Because as long as you have that pendant, you are the proof of their crimes. Go!""

Before she could protest, the iron door above them rattled violently. A loud hiss signaled the release of toxic suppressive gas into the chamber vents. Julian shoved Elena into the chute. She screamed as she plunged into the darkness, sliding down the slick metal tube into the unknown abyss below.
