Chapter 9 - The Safehouse in the Hills

The roaring engine of the speedboat cut through the black waters of the river, leaving the burning silhouette of Sterling Manor far behind them. Elena sat huddled in the passenger seat, wrapped in Julian’s heavy tactical jacket, while Julian navigated the treacherous currents with practiced precision.
An hour later, they docked at a secluded, overgrown wooden pier nestled beneath the thick pines of the northern ridges. Hidden among the trees stood a modest, modernist cabin made of slate and dark glass—a stark contrast to the baroque grandeur of the estate they had fled.
Julian led Elena inside, locking the reinforced steel door behind them and punching an eight-digit code into a wall panel. Instantly, soft amber lighting illuminated the minimalist interior. He went straight to a medical cabinet, pulling out antiseptic and clean bandages.
""Sit,"" he commanded gently, gesturing toward the kitchen counter.
Elena climbed onto the barstool, her body aching from the violent slide down the chute and the freezing rain. Julian knelt before her, carefully lifting her hem to inspect the scrapes along her shins and knees. His touch was surprisingly gentle, a jarring contradiction to the lethal man who had disarmed two guards without blinking just an hour earlier.
""You should let me do that,"" Elena said quietly, feeling self-conscious. ""I'm a maid. I'm used to taking care of wounds.""
""You are not a maid,"" Julian said firmly, applying antiseptic to a cut on her knee without looking up. ""You are Clara Sterling's only child. By blood and by law, half of everything my family owns belongs to you. In fact, if the original trust is validated, you own more of the empire than my father ever did.""
""I don't care about the money, Julian,"" Elena whispered, looking around the quiet, safe cabin. ""I just wanted to know who my mother was. She always cried when she looked at this pendant. She told me it was a curse.""
Julian stopped his movements, his dark eyes meeting hers. ""It was a curse. My father coveted power above all things. When my mother discovered he was embezzling from your mother’s trust to fund illegal offshore acquisitions, she threatened to go to the authorities. He locked her away and hunted your mother down.""
He stood up, standing close enough that Elena could feel the warmth radiating from him. ""I spent ten years believing she died because I was too young and too weak to protect her. I won't fail you, Elena.""
Elena’s heart skipped a beat at the raw sincerity in his gaze. But before she could speak, Julian’s secure satellite phone buzzed loudly on the marble counter.

Julian glanced at the caller ID, his jaw tightening into stone. He put it on speaker.
""Julian,"" Lord Sterling’s voice hissed through the speaker, raspy and venomous. ""Enjoy your little victory with the scullery rat. But you forgot one detail. Look at the local news.""
