Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Study

The sound of Lord Sterling’s cane striking the marble echoed like gunshots down the grand corridor. The patriarch’s knuckles were white against the carved silver handle of his walking stick. Behind him, two armed estate guards stood at rigid attention, their presence transforming the domestic dispute into an armed standoff.
""Father,"" Julian said, not letting go of Elena’s pendant immediately. He allowed the silver charm to slip through his fingers slowly, his eyes never truly leaving Elena’s face. ""You recognize this, don't you?""
""I recognize an impertinent servant who has grossly overstepped her boundaries,"" Lord Sterling retorted coldly, his gaze sweeping over Elena with absolute disdain. ""Victoria was entirely within her rights to discipline staff found loitering in restricted quarters. Elena, leave us. Report to the housekeeper's office immediately to collect your wages. You are dismissed from Sterling Manor.""
Panic seized Elena’s chest. Without this job, she couldn’t pay for the clinic treatments her younger brother desperately needed in the lower city. ""My Lord, please! I didn't steal anything. I was only bringing fresh linens to the west wing as instructed—""
""Quiet!"" Victoria sneered, wrapping her arm possessively around Julian’s elbow. ""You heard Lord Sterling. Pack your miserable rags and get out.""
""She stays,"" Julian declared. The command cut through the room like a freshly sharpened blade.
Victoria gasped, recoiling as Julian shook her arm off his sleeve. Even Lord Sterling seemed taken aback by the open defiance in his heir's voice. ""Julian, you do not dictate employment in this house,"" the older man warned, his jaw tightening into rigid lines. ""Do not let a passing sentimentality make a fool of you.""
""I am the master of this estate as of midnight tonight, Father,"" Julian reminded him, his eyes burning with cold ambition. ""The handover documents were signed yesterday. Her employment falls under my jurisdiction.""
Julian turned back to Elena, offering her his hand—an unthinkable gesture for a billionaire heir toward a common scullery maid. ""Go to my private study on the third floor. Lock the door from the inside, and do not speak to anyone until I arrive.""
Elena hesitated, glancing between the furious old patriarch, the venomous mistress, and the dark man offering her salvation. She nodded timidly and scrambled down the hallway as fast as her trembling legs could carry her.

Julian watched her retreat until she vanished around the corner. Then, he turned to face his father. ""You told me she died twenty years ago in a carriage fire. So why does that girl wear her exact wedding crest around her neck?""
Lord Sterling’s face drained of color, his breathing turning shallow. ""Julian... you have no idea what you have awakened.""
