Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Rain

The rain lashed against the massive glass windows of the upscale downtown restaurant, blurring the city lights into streaks of neon and gold. Clara’s bare feet stepped onto the slick, polished obsidian floor, her oversized white knitted sweater swallowing her slender frame. Every breath she took was a ragged, painful struggle, the purple bruises blossoming across her collarbone and jaw serving as a brutal testament to the night she had just survived. Clutching a worn manila envelope to her chest like a shield, her wide, terrified eyes scanned the room until they locked onto him. Sitting alone at a corner table in a crisp white shirt and loosened tie, his gaze instantly hardened from casual indifference to absolute, razor-sharp intensity. She crossed the remaining distance, her voice trembling as the words tore past her lips. ""Dean sent me..."" He stood up abruptly, the chair scraping against the floor, catching the envelope from her shaking hands with a mixture of fierce urgency and disbelief. ""I got you,"" he muttered, his voice a low, anchoring rumble that cut through the ambient noise of the restaurant. But as the doors behind her rattled in the wind, a sudden chilling realization settled over them: Dean’s shadow was already stretching across the city, and escape was only the beginning of a war.
