Chapter 11 - The Server Room Breach

The server room hummed with a low, deafening chorus of thousands of cooling fans, bathing the vast, windowless chamber in flickering blue and amber LED light. He stationed himself at the heavy double doors, keeping watch down the sterile white hallway while Clara rushed to the central mainframe console. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, inputting the decryption keys from the manila envelope to upload a master malware payload directly into Dean’s global database. ""How much longer?"" he called out in a low whisper through his comm-piece, hearing a distant echo of heavy boots approaching down the corridor. ""Almost there! The firewall is ten layers deep, but Julian’s backdoor is bypassing them one by one!"" Clara gritted her teeth, sweat pouring down her forehead as the progress bar hit ninety-five percent. Suddenly, a piercing red alarm klaxon blared overhead, bathing the entire room in a flashing crimson warning light. ""We’ve been compromised!"" he shouted, stepping back inside and firing two precise shots down the hallway as security forces rounded the corner, their flashlights cutting through the gloom. ""Upload complete! It's done!"" Clara yelled, ripping the flash drive from the port just as the main server rack sparked and shut down completely, plunging the facility into sudden, eerie darkness. Grabbed by the arm, she was yanked behind a stack of server cabinets as a hail of rubber and lead bullets shredded the air above them, turning a routine infiltration into a desperate fight for survival.
