Chapter 7 - Flight into the Underbelly

They burst through the service exit of the building into the torrential downpour, the cold rain instantly soaking through his shirt and her oversized sweater. The alleyway was pitch black, illuminated only by the flickering neon sign of a noodle shop down the block. He pulled Clara behind a row of industrial trash bins as a sleek black SUV crept slowly past the mouth of the alley, its high beams sweeping across the wet pavement like searchlights. Clara’s teeth chattered uncontrollably, the cold biting into her bare feet, but she didn’t utter a single complaint, holding the manila envelope tight against her chest inside a plastic bag he had managed to grab from the kitchen. ""Can you run?"" he asked, his voice urgent against the roar of the rain. She nodded resolutely, the terror in her eyes replaced by a grim, desperate survival instinct. ""Lead the way,"" she whispered. They darted through the labyrinth of backstreets, leaping over puddles and navigating the damp concrete jungle of the city’s industrial district. After ten blocks of breathless sprinting, they ducked into a subterranean subway maintenance stairwell that led down into the abandoned lower levels of the transit system. Safe from the immediate pursuit of Dean’s vehicles, they collapsed against a concrete pillar in the dim, echoing tunnel, the sound of dripping water their only accompaniment. As he checked her bare feet for cuts in the dim light, Clara looked up at him, realizing that the man she had trusted her life to was just as dangerous as the monster she was running from—yet he was the only thing standing between her and a shallow grave.
