Chapter 3 - The Weight of Evidence

Inside the dim sanctuary of the private lounge, the manila envelope sat on the low mahogany table between them like a ticking bomb. Clara pulled her knees up to her chest, still wrapped in the oversized sweater, her bare feet tucked underneath her. He reached out slowly, his fingers brushing the rough paper edge before sliding the flap open. Inside lay a dense stack of documents, encrypted flash drives, and photographs detailing years of embezzlement, illegal acquisitions, and corporate espionage orchestrated by Dean. Each page was a nail in the coffin of a man the world viewed as a philanthropic pillar of society. ""He thinks these are locked in his private safe at the penthouse,"" Clara whispered, her voice laced with disbelief that she had actually made it out with them. ""If anyone finds out I took them, he won't just kill me; he'll erase everyone I’ve ever loved."" He flipped through a financial ledger, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the shell companies Dean used to launder money—the exact same network that had ruined his own family years ago. The coincidence was too precise to be mere luck; this was fate intersecting their paths with the force of a wrecking ball. He looked up, meeting her gaze with an intensity that promised absolute protection. ""These papers aren't just evidence, Clara. They are his execution order. But to use them, we need to move before his security team realizes they're missing."" Just as he spoke, his phone buzzed violently against the table, flashing an unknown number with a local prefix—a silent message letting them know the hunt had officially begun.
