Chapter 8 - The Underground Alliance

Deep within the concrete bowels of the abandoned subway station, a single battery-powered lantern cast long, dancing shadows against the damp walls. He sat cross-legged across from Clara, pulling a compact first-aid kit from a hidden compartment in the wall, gently cleaning the scrapes on her feet with an antiseptic wipe that made her hiss softly in pain. ""You didn't have to come back for me,"" Clara murmured, watching the way the lantern light caught the sharp angles of his face. ""You didn't even know me when you took that envelope."" He paused, looking up with a gaze that carried the weight of a thousand untold stories. ""I knew your brother, Clara,"" he said quietly, the words dropping like lead weights into the silence. Clara’s breath hitched, her eyes widening in disbelief. ""Julian... you knew Julian?"" A dark shadow crossed his features as he returned to tending her wounds. ""We served together overseas, and we both trusted Dean with our futures. Julian found out what Dean was really doing—the money laundering, the human trafficking fronts—and he ended up in a 'tragic' car accident two years ago. The police called it negligence. I called it murder."" Clara stared at him, the pieces of the horrifying puzzle finally snapping into place. The manila envelope she carried wasn't just her ticket to freedom; it was the exact evidence Julian had died trying to secure. ""Then we're fighting the same war,"" she whispered, her voice steadying as the fear finally burned away into pure, unadulterated resolve. He offered a faint, grim smile, pulling a encrypted satellite phone from his pocket. ""Exactly. And now that Dean knows we have this file, he’s going to make a massive mistake. It’s time we poke the bear.""
