Chapter 4 - Ghosts of the Past

The phone continued its silent, rhythmic vibration against the mahogany wood, but neither of them reached for it. The sterile light of the screen illuminated the tension etched into his face, reminding Clara of how little she truly knew about the man holding her hand. ""Who is calling?"" she asked, her voice barely audible above the hum of the air conditioning. ""A ghost,"" he replied grimly, tossing the phone face down. He turned his attention back to her, his thumb gently tracing the edge of a fading bruise on her wrist. ""You mentioned Dean like he’s an untouchable god, Clara. But to me, he’s just a man with a glass house."" She swallowed hard, memories of the past three years flooding back—the slow, calculated isolation, the gaslighting, the velvet handcuffs that turned a luxurious mansion into a gilded cage. Dean had always presented himself as a savior to the public, a charismatic tech mogul with an impeccable reputation, but behind closed doors, he was a monster who treated human lives like disposable assets. ""You don't understand,"" she pleaded, tears welling in her eyes again. ""He doesn't lose. Anyone who stands against him vanishes. Look at what he did to me just because I asked questions about his offshore accounts."" He stopped tracing her wrist, his grip tightening just enough to anchor her back to reality. ""Then it’s a good thing I’m not anyone, Clara. I’ve been waiting for a reason to tear his empire down brick by brick, and you just handed me the sledgehammer."" Yet, even as he spoke those bold words, a sudden chill ran down his spine as he realized that Dean’s reach extended farther than they calculated, and their temporary sanctuary might already be compromised.
