DEBTS OF BLOOD AND SILENCE / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Ledgers on the Marble

The polished black Italian marble of the penthouse reflected the cloudy, overcast sky hanging heavily over the metropolis. Every sound inside the vast office was swallowed by the silence, except for the dull, rhythmic click of Harper Quinn’s heels. She was exhausted. Her body felt heavier than it ever had in her twenty-seven years of life, the weight of eight months carried quietly beneath her tailored charcoal wool coat and fitted black maternity dress.

Two armed security guards flanked her, their hands resting loosely near their concealed holsters, but their expressions were not hostile; they were bewildered. Everyone in Julian Bell’s inner sanctum knew who Harper Quinn was. Eight months ago, she was his chief forensic accountant, his most trusted confidante, and the only woman allowed to touch his private documents without prior clearance.

Then, overnight, she had vanished along with three offshore banking ledgers containing enough encrypted evidence to dismantle Bell Holdings and land Julian in federal prison for several lifetimes.

Julian Bell stood motionless in the center of the expansive hall, his tall, athletic frame silhouetted against the panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass windows. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with sleeves rolled precisely to his forearms, exposing the dark, intricate sleeve tattoos curling around his muscular arms and reaching onto the back of his hands. A sharp black waistcoat and a loosened tie gave him the look of a king prepared for battle.

Harper halted five paces away. With a trembling hand, she released her grip on the heavy, scuffed brown leather duffel bag. It hit the marble floor with a soft, heavy thud, its zipper gaping open just enough to reveal thick, bound financial ledgers and blue case folders.

""I brought everything back,"" Harper whispered, her throat dry, her voice cracking under the sheer emotional strain of seeing him again. ""Every single ledger. Every offshore registry. Nothing is missing. Julian... I never touched a single dollar.""

Julian didn’t look down at the bag. The ledgers, worth tens of billions and the survival of his empire, did not capture his attention for a fraction of a second. Instead, his dark, calculating eyes traveled slowly down her pale, delicate face, past the hollows beneath her red-rimmed eyes, down to the prominent, unmistakable swell beneath her coat.

His jaw muscles tightened violently. A muscle jumped in his cheek, his breathing slowing until it was almost imperceptible.

""Eight months,"" Julian said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through the floorboards. It wasn’t a question; it was an arithmetic realization.

""That's why I disappeared,"" Harper whispered, tears finally escaping the corners of her eyes and running down her pale cheeks. She didn't flinch away when he took a long, measured stride forward, stopping directly in front of her. The clean scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and rain enveloped her, instantly bringing back the memories of the night before she fled.

Julian lifted his right hand. The tattooed fingers, known for signing million-dollar acquisitions and breaking men's careers without mercy, brushed gently against her wet cheek. His touch was unexpectedly warm, terrifyingly gentle.

""Is the child mine, Harper?"" Julian asked, his voice shaking with a rare, dangerous tremor.

Harper looked directly into his eyes, her lips parting to speak the truth she had guarded with her life. But before the word could leave her lips, the double mahogany doors of the private elevator chimed softly.

Julian’s head snapped toward the elevator. The doors slid open to reveal his younger brother, Marcus Bell, flanked by two armed men holding silenced tactical pistols.

""I wouldn't answer that if I were you, Harper,"" Marcus murmured with a cold, triumphant smile. ""Because neither of you is walking out of this tower alive.""
