Chapter 11 - Flight Through the Storm

The rain came down in relentless, torrential sheets as they stepped onto the roof. The wind whipped Julian’s hair across his eyes, the cold drops stinging against the open cuts on his face. Behind them, the city skyline was shrouded in thick, gray clouds, illuminated intermittently by distant flashes of lightning.
The twin turbines of the unmarked black AgustaWestland helicopter were already screaming at full operational pitch, its rotor blades slicing through the deluge with a rhythmic, deafening roar.
Vance pushed forward, holding an umbrella over Harper and the baby as Julian carried them swiftly across the wet asphalt. Dr. Chen scrambled aboard first, securing the medical incubator and portable oxygen tanks inside the cabin.
Julian gently lowered Harper into the rear seat, strapping the wide safety harness around her and placing the bundled infant securely into her arms.
""You're going to the private compound in Maine,"" Julian shouted over the roar of the engines, leaning into the cabin. ""It's completely off the grid. Self-sustaining. Nobody knows the coordinates except Vance and me.""
Harper reached out, her fingers digging desperately into the wet sleeve of his shirt. ""What do you mean we are going? Julian, you aren't getting on the helicopter!""
Julian shook his head, his dark eyes filled with fierce devotion. ""If I board this aircraft, Valenti’s radar networks will track the transponder signature. They know my flight profiles. I have to stay behind to draw their attention, activate the countermeasures, and finish this once and for all.""
""No! Julian, you can't!"" Harper wept, trying to unbuckle the belt, but her weakened body betrayed her. ""I spent eight months running away from you because I was afraid! I didn't survive that just to lose you now! Let the city go! Let the company burn!""
""This isn't about the company, Harper,"" Julian said softly, his voice cutting through the mechanical roar as he leaned in and kissed her trembling lips with raw, desperate passion. ""This is about ensuring that our son never has to spend a single day of his life looking over his shoulder. I am ending this blood debt today.""
He pulled back, his eyes locked onto hers with absolute certainty. ""Trust me, Harper. Have I ever broken a promise to you?""
""Julian..."" she sobbed, unable to stop the tears.
Julian stepped back onto the wet helipad and looked at Vance, who stood by the pilot's door. ""Get them to Maine. If a single scratch touches either of them, don't bother coming back.""
""With my life, boss,"" Vance answered, saluting grimly before pulling the cabin door shut.
The helicopter lifted off slowly, pitching forward into the torrential rain and rising into the gray clouds until its navigation lights disappeared entirely into the tempest.
Julian stood alone on the helipad, soaked to the skin, watching the empty sky.

Suddenly, the roof access door behind him was kicked open. Marcus stood there, drenched, his broken arm wrapped in a makeshift sling, brandishing a military-grade assault rifle with his good hand. Behind him stood six armed men wearing the black tactical gear of Don Valenti’s personal guard.
""Going somewhere, brother?"" Marcus sneered, rain pouring down his bruised face.
