Chapter 13 - Ashes and Ledgers

Three hours later, the rain had turned into a steady, gray mist over the city.
The media was in an absolute frenzy. News helicopters circled the burning crown of the Bell Tower, broadcasting live footage of the disaster across the globe. Head headlines flashed across international screens: BELL EMPIRE COLLAPSES: BILLIONAIRE CEO REPORTED DEAD IN PENTHOUSE EXPLOSION FOLLOWING FEDERAL RAID.
In an abandoned industrial warehouse near the commercial shipping docks five miles away, Julian Bell stepped out of the shadows.
He had changed into simple, dark utility clothing—black boots, dark jeans, and a heavy waterproof canvas jacket. His bleeding hands were tightly wrapped in white sterile bandages. His face was streaked with soot and dried blood, but his dark eyes were clearer and more dangerous than they had ever been.
Waiting inside the warehouse was an old, weathered man named Thomas, Julian’s most trusted logistics handler from before the Bell Holdings era. On a metal folding table sat a satellite terminal, a secure encrypted phone, and a heavy duffel bag filled with untraceable bearer bonds and tactical gear.
""The world thinks you're dead, Mr. Bell,"" Thomas said quietly, handing Julian a warm mug of black coffee.
""Good,"" Julian said, taking a sip, feeling the bitter heat revive his exhausted muscles. ""Let them look for my ashes in the rubble.""
""What about Miss Quinn and the child?"" Thomas asked.
Julian looked down at the satellite terminal. A single encrypted ping showed a green icon settled safely in the dense pine forests of Maine. Vance had confirmed arrival thirty minutes ago. Harper and Alexander were under the care of a private surgical team in a bunker buried forty feet beneath granite rock.
""They are safe,"" Julian murmured, a rare sense of profound relief softening his hardened jaw. ""Now, it's time to clean house.""
""Don Valenti has retreated to his coastal fortress in Newport,"" Thomas reported, bringing up blueprints of a heavily guarded cliffside compound on the terminal screen. ""Since the news of your death broke, he believes he has won. He’s celebrating with his lieutenants tonight.""
""He thinks he won because he thinks I fought for money,"" Julian said coldly, setting the coffee mug down and unzipping the tactical bag. Inside lay two customized silenced pistols, night-vision optics, and encrypted drives.
""What about the federal ledgers?"" Thomas asked. ""The SEC has frozen the accounts.""
Julian pulled a small, silver thumb drive from his pocket—the one Harper had hidden in the secret compartment of her leather bag, the one she had whispered about before the chaos began.
""Harper didn't bring back the ledgers to save my corporate accounts,"" Julian said, looking at the drive with profound admiration for the brilliant woman he loved. ""She audited Marcus's private servers. This drive doesn't contain my tax records. It contains forty years of Don Valenti’s money laundering, human trafficking networks, and his personal payroll of corrupt federal judges.""
Julian plugged the drive into the satellite terminal.
""Transmit this directly to the Director of the Department of Justice and the international press,"" Julian commanded. ""Simultaneously.""

""That will completely destroy the Valenti family within hours,"" Thomas noted, his eyes widening.
""No,"" Julian corrected, racking the slide of his pistol with a cold, metallic snap. ""The law will destroy what remains of his organization. I am going to Newport to destroy the man himself.""
