Chapter 4 - Shadows of Zurich

The private master suite at the top of the tower was a fortress of soundproof glass, mahogany, and reinforced steel. Julian laid Harper down gently on the king-sized bed, stripping away her damp coat and propping her up with pillows. Within four minutes, Dr. Robert Chen, Julian’s long-standing private physician, entered the room alongside two trauma nurses, wheeling emergency obstetrics equipment.
""Her vitals are dangerously elevated, Julian,"" Dr. Chen said, snapping on latex gloves while checking Harper’s blood pressure and placing a fetal heart monitor over her belly. The rapid, rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the baby's heartbeat filled the room, bringing a momentary sense of miraculous calm into the violent morning.
""Is the baby in danger?"" Julian demanded, his voice low, his fingers refusing to let go of Harper’s cold hand.
""She’s thirty-three weeks along,"" Chen answered, inspecting the monitor closely. ""Stress-induced pre-term labor. If we cannot stop the contractions within the hour, we’ll have to deliver the baby via emergency cesarean right here. Moving her to a public hospital is out of the question given the security breach.""
""Do whatever it takes to keep them both alive,"" Julian ordered, his voice unwavering, though the knuckles of his clenched fist were bone white. ""Use every resource at your disposal.""
Harper opened her eyes slowly, looking up at Julian. The medication Dr. Chen had administered through an IV was beginning to take the edge off her agony, but her mind remained sharp with lingering terror.
""Julian,"" she called softly, tugging at his hand.
He leaned down immediately, his ear inches from her lips. ""I'm right here, Harper. I'm not leaving.""
""In Zurich..."" she whispered, her chest heaving lightly. ""When I fled eight months ago, I thought you wanted me dead. Someone sent security footage to my apartment—footage of your right-hand man signing a contract on my life. It had your digital signature.""
""It was forged, Harper,"" Julian said fiercely, his dark eyes burning with regret. ""The moment I discovered you were missing, I tore the continent apart trying to track you down. I would never harm you. You know that. In your soul, you know that.""
""I know now,"" Harper sobbed quietly. ""Marcus was the one who intercepted me at the clinic in Switzerland two months ago. He couldn't get the ledgers because I kept them hidden in a safe deposit box, but he stole the medical records. Julian... the baby isn't just carrying your bloodline.""
Julian frowned slightly, brushing a damp strand of blonde hair from her forehead. ""What are you talking about?""
""The baby has an extremely rare genetic blood antigen—Rh-null. The golden blood,"" Harper said, her voice trembling. ""Only a few dozen people in the entire world have it. You have it, Julian. It’s the reason the Bell family has funded private hematology labs for thirty years.""
Julian froze, the blood draining from his features.

""Marcus doesn't want your money, Julian,"" Harper whispered, a tear tracing its way into the pillow. ""He sold the baby's genetic profile to the Valenti syndicate. They don't want to kill our child... they want to harvest the blood to save old man Valenti.""
Before Julian could absorb the horrifying revelation, the lights across the entire tower flickered twice and died, plunging the master suite into pitch-black darkness.
