Chapter 5 - Darkness Falling

The sudden silence following the blackout was deafening. The continuous hum of the fetal monitor went dead, replaced only by Harper’s sharp intake of breath and the quick rustle of Dr. Chen’s equipment.
""Backup generators should have kicked in within three seconds,"" Dr. Chen said, his voice laced with sudden unease as he reached for a penlight. ""Someone severed the primary and secondary auxiliary lines.""
""Stay down,"" Julian instructed, his voice slicing through the gloom with absolute command. He reached beneath the bedside drawer, retrieving an automatic firearm fitted with a tactical flashlight and suppressor. He flicked the light onto its lowest crimson setting, casting a muted red glow across the room that wouldn't compromise their night vision or give away their position through the windows.
He turned to the two nurses. ""Disconnect the monitors. Keep her warm. If you hear shooting outside that door, take her into the reinforced panic closet behind the bathroom.""
""Julian, don't leave me,"" Harper pleaded, her hand blindly reaching out and catching the sleeve of his shirt. Even in the dim red light, the terror in her wide hazel eyes was agonizing to behold. Another contraction rippled through her, causing her to arch her back slightly with a stifled moan of pain. ""They're already inside. I can feel it.""
""I am not leaving you unprotected,"" Julian said, kneeling beside the bed so their faces were level. He placed his warm, calloused hand gently against her swollen stomach. Beneath his palm, he felt a distinct, faint kick—a life defying the surrounding violence. A fierce, primitive protectiveness ignited in his chest, burning away every ounce of corporate restraint he had maintained for years.
""Listen to me, Harper,"" he said, his voice dropping into an intimate, unbreakable vow. ""Nobody takes what is mine. Not my empire, not you, and certainly not our child. I burned down the city once to build this kingdom. I will burn down the world before I let anyone harm a hair on your head.""
He leaned forward and pressed a hard, lingering kiss to her forehead, then stood up and turned to the heavy reinforced door.
His private radio earpiece crackled with static before Vance’s voice cut through, distorted and frantic: ""Boss... multiple breaches at the private heliport. These aren't Marcus's street thugs. They're Valenti's European extraction team. They’ve cut through the roof access!""
""How many?"" Julian asked coldly, stepping into the dark corridor.
""At least twelve. Heavily armed, night-vision gear, surgical containment kits,"" Vance answered over the sound of distant suppressed gunfire echoing from the stairwell. ""They aren't here to negotiate, Mr. Bell. They’re here for the package.""
May you like
""The package is my child,"" Julian replied, racking the slide of his weapon. ""Grant them no quarter. Shoot to kill.""
Julian stepped out into the hallway, the crimson darkness swallowing him whole. Just down the marble gallery, the heavy fire door was violently kicked open, and the green glow of night-vision goggles illuminated the shadows.
