Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Shadows

The heavy double doors of the luxurious mansion swung open to reveal a sprawling, opulent foyer dominated by a sweeping grand staircase. Standing frozen at the threshold was Elena, a twenty-five-year-old woman with a pale face, dark hair tightly tied back, and a worn brown utility jacket over a light shirt. She was visibly distressed, her eyes swimming with tears as she clutched a blue-wrapped baby close to her chest. Flanking the entrance were cold, silent tactical security guards, their presence adding an air of inescapable imprisonment. Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs as heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed from above. A tall, muscular man of thirty-five with short dark hair, dressed in a sharp black button-down shirt and black pants, began descending the stairs. His demeanor was intensely stern and intimidating, his jaw clenched as he stared down at the uninvited visitors.
Victor stopped midway down the steps, his gaze locking onto the trembling woman. The silence in the grand foyer was suffocating, broken only by the soft, ragged breathing of the exhausted mother. Victor’s eyes narrowed as he assessed the situation, taking in the utility jacket, the tear-stained cheeks, and the bundle in her arms. With a voice like grinding stone, he broke the stillness, demanding, “What is this?” Elena opened her mouth to speak, but her voice caught in her throat as a sharp click of a security radio echoed from outside, signaling that they were completely cut off from the outside world.
