Chapter 2 - The Weight of the Past

Elena’s knees trembled under the crushing weight of Victor’s stare. She clutched the blue baby blanket tighter, feeling the soft, bright green toy dinosaur tucked against her coat. Victor reached the bottom of the staircase, standing imposingly before her, his black shirt emphasizing his powerful build. He didn’t offer comfort; instead, his eyes darted to the small toddler peering out from the blue hood, a three-year-old boy with curly dark hair and wide, innocent eyes who looked up at the towering stranger without a shred of adult cynicism. The muscular man’s expression remained guarded, a fortress of cold detachment built over years of isolation and dangerous power.

Victor’s fists clenched at his sides as he wrestled with memories he had buried deep away. Before he could voice his final verdict on whether to turn them away or pull them into his perilous orbit, a heavy thud echoed from the massive front doors, signaling that someone—or something—was tracking them from the dark estate grounds.
