Chapter 7 - The Guarded Heart

The dust settled over the shattered glass of the study. Victor stood over the unconscious form of Marcus, his chest heaving beneath his torn black shirt. He slowly raised his gaze to meet Elena’s terrified eyes. The raw fury in his expression melted away, replaced by a deep, aching exhaustion. He looked past Elena toward the open door leading back to the guest suite, where the faint sound of the toddler shifting in his sleep could be heard. “You shouldn’t have touched those files,” Victor said, his voice unusually raw, lacking its usual intimidating edge. Elena clutched the edge of the desk, tears spilling over her cheeks as she demanded to know why he abandoned them on that rainy night years ago.
Victor turned away, running a calloused hand through his short dark hair. He walked over to the French window, staring out into the sprawling, fog-drenched estate grounds. Without looking back at her, he confessed that staying away was the only way to keep them off the radar of the Syndicate that hunted him. But as he turned back to face her, his eyes softened completely, looking down at the green toy dinosaur that Elena had accidentally left on the desk. Just as a fragile bridge of understanding began to form between them, the mansion’s emergency klaxon suddenly wailed to life, flashing crimson light across the walls.
