Chapter 5 - Secrets in the Study

Back in the guest suite, Elena couldn't sit still. The ticking of a grandfather clock in the hall felt like a countdown. Walking quietly across the Persian rug, she explored the corners of the sprawling room, looking for a secondary exit or a phone. Her fingers brushed against a heavy velvet curtain, revealing a hidden alcove and a side door that led directly into Victor’s private study. The room smelled of old leather, expensive bourbon, and ozone. Moonlight illuminated rows of mahogany bookshelves and a large oak desk covered in tactical maps and financial ledgers. On the center of the desk lay an open journal, its pages filled with frantic handwriting and a faded photograph that made Elena’s breath hitch in her throat.

It was a picture of a younger Victor, standing outside a rundown diner, smiling warmly while holding a newborn baby wrapped in a familiar blue blanket. Next to it lay a stack of investigative files bearing Elena’s own maiden name. She reached out, her trembling fingers hovering inches above the photograph, realizing that Victor hadn't just forgotten them—he had been searching for them all along. Suddenly, the heavy study door clicked. The lock turned, and the footsteps of someone entering the room grew dangerously close.
