Chapter 10 - The Plunge

The flames exploded through the doorway behind them, searing the backs of Raymond's clothes. Below them, black ocean waves crashed violently against the wooden pilings of the dock.
""Hold your breath, Clara!"" Raymond yelled above the roar of the inferno.
She locked her arms around his neck, burying her face into the crook of his shoulder. Raymond leaped into the void.
The fall felt endless, suspended between burning orange skies and pitch-black abyss. They hit the water like concrete, the freezing saltwater knocking the breath from Raymond's lungs. The bitter cold bit into his flesh, dragging them deep beneath the turbulent surface.
Raymond fought the surging current, kicking furiously upward until his head broke the waves. Clara emerged beside him, gasping and sputtering water, her hands clawing for his shoulders.

In the distance, the sirens of harbor patrol boats flashed blue and red across the choppy water. Above them on the cliffside, the warehouse collapsed in a brilliant supernova of sparks and embers.
Just as a patrol boat’s spotlight locked onto them, a shadowy speed boat cut through the darkness on the other side of the bay, speeding into the open sea. At the helm stood a woman in a singed black coat.
