Chapter 8 - The Shot in the Dark

The gun went off with an ear-splitting crack. The bullet whizzed past Raymond's cheek, embedding itself into a steel pillar behind him.

In a fraction of a second, Raymond bridged the gap. He knocked Cynthia's wrist upward, disarming the weapon with brutal efficiency. The revolver clattered across the floor and plunged between the floorboards into the dark sea churning below.

Cynthia scrambled backward, her hands scraping against the floorboards. She reached into her coat and pulled out a small black detonator. ""You think you've won, brother? I wired the fuel tanks beneath this pier. If I don't inherit the Vance legacy, neither will you!""

Raymond lunged, tackling Cynthia to the ground just as she pressed the red switch.

A dull, thudding detonation shook the foundation. Plumes of black smoke and orange flames burst from the eastern end of the warehouse, cutting off the main exit. Clara screamed as burning debris crashed down around her bound figure.

Raymond pinned Cynthia's arms, but the madwoman smiled through bloodied teeth. ""Burn with me, Raymond.""
