Kane frowned, glancing down at the briefcase.

""That isn't the prototype case,"" Raymond said, taking a step forward into the whipping rain. ""That’s a decoy loaded with a low-yield tracking beacon. Clara knew that the day I showed it to her.""

Clara kicked the weapon over the roof ledge, watching it plummet into the gardens below. She turned back to Raymond, the cold mask melting away to reveal raw, exhausted relief.

Two police helicopters swooped out of the storm clouds, blinding the rooftop in dazzling searchlights as tactical officers swarmed the helipad to secure Kane.

Raymond walked across the rain-slicked roof and stopped inches from Clara. He gently took the gun from her trembling hand and slid it into his pocket, then pulled her against his chest, wrapping his heavy overcoat around her shivering frame.

""It's over,"" Raymond whispered into her hair.

Clara looked up at him, her hazel eyes glistening under the brilliant searchlights. ""Not quite, Raymond. There’s one more thing you need to know about Cynthia’s safe."""
