Chapter 13 - Betrayal at Home

Raymond’s blood ran cold. He pulled his phone from his pocket. The live security feed from his estate was completely dead. The private cameras in his study showed only static.
""Clara never worked for me,"" Cynthia spat, her eyes gleaming with triumphant malice as the marshals forced her hands behind her back. ""She worked for him. Did you really think Nicholas Kane was dead?""
Raymond didn't listen to the rest. He turned on his heel, sprinting past the marshals into the private elevator.
He dialed Marcus’s direct line. It rang five times before a voice answered—not Marcus, but a smooth, deep voice that sent an icy shudder down Raymond's spine.
""Good evening, Raymond,"" the voice said smoothly. ""Thank you for clearing Cynthia out of the way. She was always so terribly crude.""
""Kane,"" Raymond growled, his voice vibrating with predatory wrath.

""She played her part well, didn't she? The frightened little bird falling from the balcony, weeping into your arms,"" Kane chuckled softly. ""Now, Clara and I are leaving with your empire's true secret. The bio-patents in your cellar sub-vault.""
In the background of the call, Raymond heard Clara’s voice, cold, crisp, and commanding: ""Hurry up, Nicholas. The transport helicopter is landing on the roof.""
