Stepping through the threshold into the inner sanctum of the vault, David blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights. In the center of the sterile chamber stood a high-tech cryogenic medical pod, its glass window fogged with condensation. Inside lay Sarah, her eyes closed peacefully, hooked up to an advanced life-support matrix that was actively stabilizing her vitals. Standing beside the pod, holding a digital decryption key, was Dr. Elena Vance—Cole’s lead geneticist and the actual mastermind behind Project Janus. Elena turned slowly, holding a small handheld detonator pointed directly at the facility’s main power grid.
“Don't take another step, Miller. One click, and the life-support system shuts down permanently,” Elena warned, her voice unnervingly calm.
David stopped dead in his tracks, his heart hammering against his ribs. He looked at Sarah, then back at Elena, keeping his hands raised.
“It’s over, Elena. The federal tribunal has the entire archive. Your network is dismantled,” David said steadily, taking a slow step forward.
