Chapter 4 - Echoes of Betrayal

Deep within the damp, forgotten tunnels of the old naval shipyard three miles away, David caught his breath under the flickering fluorescent light of an abandoned maintenance room. Emily sat on an old wooden crate, rocking the infant Liam, who whimpered softly against her chest. Her eyes, wide and terrified, searched her father’s bruised face.
“Dad, are we safe here?” she whispered, her voice cracking under the emotional weight far too heavy for a ten-year-old.
David knelt before her, gently wiping a smudge of dirt from her cheek, forcing a calm, reassuring smile that didn't reach his eyes.

“You’re safe with me, Em. Always,” he promised, his voice steady despite the adrenaline still raging through his veins.
He turned his attention back to the contents of the black briefcase spread across an iron workbench. Among the surveillance logs and financial wire receipts was a flash drive embossed with the logo of Apex Global Security—the very private military contractor David had resigned from five years ago. A cold realization washed over him. This wasn't random corporate espionage; this was an internal purge led by his former commander, Director Cole. As David plugged the drive into a rugged tactical tablet, the screen flickered to life, displaying a real-time GPS tracking map centered directly on their coordinates. They had been tracked the moment they left the hotel.
